Golden Opportunities: Portugal’s Golden Visa Program Hits Three-Year High
In May, Portugal’s Golden Visa program witnessed its most successful month in three years, demonstrating the ever-growing appeal of this pathway to global mobility. At Key Gains Immigration, we’re here to break down the data, and share what this means for potential investors like you.
In a stunning display of growth and success, the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) granted approval to 180 investors and 208 family members, accounting for investments worth a staggering EUR 83 million.
The American Dominance Continues
For four out of the first five months of this year, Americans topped the investor nationality list, underscoring the program’s allure to U.S citizens. In May, 31 approvals were logged for American investors, closely followed by Chinese nationals (30), British (26), Indians (16), and Brazilians (14).
Americans, with 19% of all approvals in 2023, are projected to retain their position as the top investor nationality, a title they first secured in 2022. The momentum suggests we may see more than 300 approvals for U.S investors by year’s end.
Rising British Interest Post-Brexit
Interestingly, British participation in the program has surged in the past year. This rising interest likely corresponds to post-Brexit uncertainties, with UK investors seeking the security and benefits of EU residency. A record 26 approvals for UK investors were granted in May alone, indicating an upward trend that may not have peaked yet.
Investor Nationality Shifts
Cumulatively, from the inception of the program, Americans have emerged as the third-largest investor nationality, overtaking both South Africans and Turks over the past year.
Surpassing Milestones
In a significant milestone, the Golden Visa program exceeded EUR 7 billion in total investments in May. For the first time in the program’s history, the fund investment option became the largest approval category in May, recording 68 approvals. These impressive figures suggest a banner year for the program, potentially marking its best year yet.
Program Outlook
Despite the Portuguese government’s intent to phase out the Golden Visa program in its current form, it remains open for the time being. Authorities have assured that all applications submitted under the existing scheme will be honored until the program concludes.
Despite the ups and downs of the past several months, the collective advocacy efforts of the industry have positively influenced the legislative process, fostering a cautiously optimistic outlook for the program’s future.
