About Portugal Golden Residency Program
Launched by the Portuguese government in October 2012, the residency by investment, or “golden visa” program, is open to individuals who are 18 years or older, in good health, and have no criminal record.
To apply, you’ll need to spend at least 7 days per year in Portugal for the first 5 years. Moreover, you must commit to either purchasing real estate, making a capital transfer, or creating jobs within Portugal.

Portugal’s Prime Minister, António Costa, has recently announced new updates to Portugal’s Golden Visa Program. The changes will be in effect once the new law is published.
Since its introduction in 2012, the program has successfully assisted over 10,000 investors (along with 17,000+ family members) in obtaining Portuguese residency, placing it amongst the most successful Residency by Investment Programs globally.
Until the new law is implemented, potential applicants can continue to submit their applications for consideration under the current Golden Visa Program.
Here are the key updates from the Prime Minister’s announcement:
- Current participants in the program will have their visas transitioned to a D2 Visa without needing to meet the 183-day residency requirement.
- Golden Visa holders will maintain the requirement of a seven-day annual stay in Portugal.
- Residency permits will now be extended to those investing in artistic production, cultural heritage recovery, and maintenance projects.
- The updates will not impact current applicants.
